Take a look at our testimonials. We know through experience that our clients are mostly referred by others who have experienced the positive effects of colon hydrotherapy and in turn have referred their friends. It is interesting to note that our business thrives on word of mouth.
On the contrary, colonic cleansing has been practised since ancient times. The Egyptians recorded their procedure in the Ebers Papyrus, a document dating back more than 3,000 years. They believed most illnesses originated in the colon and manifested themselves in the forms of constipation or diarrhoea, bloating, chronic fatigue, intestinal gas, stomach pain, indigestion and backache. They used infusions of herbs and water gathered from the sea in order to cleanse the colon of bacteria that could lead to such maladies. Colonics in the UK remained a minority treatment until the mid-80’s when Dr Milo Siewert moved from America to the UK and began training therapists – the current popularity and availability is due to him.
It is a method of cleansing the colon of waste matter by gentle, repeated flushing of filtered, warm water.
The colon is often referred to as the large intestine and is responsible for ridding the body of waste matter and conserving water. It harbours your good intestinal flora, which makes nutrients such as some of the B vitamins and vitamin K, if in good working order. The colon can also harbour bad intestinal flora, promoted by the diet and lifestyle that we now practice.
Colon hydrotherapy should never be painful. There may be a little cramping or gas as the colon muscles contract to expel considerable amounts of liquid and waste, but this is over very quickly and you will feel much better afterwards.
The benefits of this process include:
- The colon is cleansed of faecal matter and even debris that may have built up over a long period of time.
- The colon muscles are exercised and toned due to the gentle filling and re-emptying process which improves muscular contraction.
- The colon is returned to its natural shape once bulging pockets of trapped debris are removed resulting in a flatter stomach.
- Reflex Points are stimulated: Every system and organ of the body is connected to the colon by reflex points. Colonic stimulates these points, thereby affecting the corresponding body parts in a beneficial way.
- Both good and bad bacteria are wiped and will quickly build up again, but we find that if given the correct environment, with good diet and probiotic use, the correct balance of internal flora will preside.
Many people come back from foreign countries with stomach bugs caused by worms or parasites which can create problems on and off for years afterwards. Creating a clean environment in the colon and boosting your intestinal flora with a good probiotic helps deter these organisms from setting up house in your bowels! It’s always a good idea to have a colonic before and after travel to sunnier climes.
Eat or drink lightly in the 2 hours immediately preceding a colonic. Also helpful, but not essential, emptying the rectum with a bowel movement just prior to the colonic saves time and permits more to be accomplished.
Enemas cleanse the rectum but don’t reach anywhere near as far as the water from a colonic. Laxatives can be addictive and if used on a regular basis will make the bowel lazy – as the bowel gets used to their action it stops working by itself. A colonic is the best way to cleanse the colon.
This really depends on the individual! Some people feel absolutely brilliant following a colonic and report feeling lighter, cleaner and healthier whereas others may feel light-headed or chilled for a few moments afterwards. As soon as the colonic is finished you can carry on with your daily routine but some prefer to take the day off and relax.
When the colon is sluggish, bowel movements may not return for a few days after one colonic. This is perfectly natural and is an indication that extensive colon work is needed to remove the debris that the bowel has built up over the years, once this has been cleared, the bowel is given a chance to strengthen and heal. The build-up of faecal material decreases the muscular action in the colon. Once a series of colonics is completed, the colon will begin to function properly again. Cleansing and building programs offer preventative measures so that you can be in control of your own health, which is what THE HERING CLINIC is all about. Dietary changes may be necessary to ensure long lasting and vital health. Rarely, diarrhoea or loose bowels may be experienced due to extra water in the colon, but this is short-lived.
When the colon has been sluggish for quite a while, it becomes severely weakened due to being constantly bathed in toxic waste; it also stretches from holding excessive amounts of stool and is frequently constricted by chronic tension in the colon. Diet, exercise and disposition are three factors that must be in balance for the colon to function well. The process of colonic hydrotherapy is excellent for cleansing and healing the colon sufficiently so that changes in diet, exercise, and outlook are then able to produce their effects. Many people find the relief provided by colonics stimulates the motivation and enthusiasm to institute positive changes in their lifestyle.
To function properly, the colon should be relatively clean, but unfortunately, this does not apply to most of us, because of our diet. Consequently, as the colon builds up waste, this begins to ferment and putrefy, becoming a breeding ground for bad bacteria. Cleansing the colon of waste will wash out both good and bad bacteria but creates a more harmonious environment for the good guys in the long term because they can only breed in clean surroundings. To help more quickly re-establish the good bacteria in their new environment, we always advise the use of broad-spectrum probiotics. Once a cleaner environment is established, better nutrient absorption can also take place.
It really depends on how impacted your colon is, and for most us, it’s quite bad. The first colonic will start to remove some of the stagnant waste but subsequent treatments will remove more. It really depends on your personal objectives or whether you are suffering from an illness as to how many you need and is best discussed with your therapist. Once you have reached maintenance level, the changing of every season is a good time to have a colonic.
Most people report having a clearer, brighter skin the day after a colonic. Your skin, along with the colon, kidneys and lungs is an important organ of elimination. Once the digestive system becomes overloaded, the liver backs up and can’t detoxify properly which puts pressure on the kidneys to get rid of the toxins, and once they become overloaded it’s left to the skin to take on some of the work. Many surface eruptions on the skin are because of toxic overload. Once the colon is cleansed, this, in turn, helps the other organs, including the skin.
Conditions such as active infections, active inflammation (such as diverticulitis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis), a painful fissure or painful haemorrhoids mean treatment cannot be comfortably carried out until they are healed or in remission. Diseases such as congestive heart disease, severe uncontrolled hypertension, severe anaemia, liver cirrhosis, kidney disease, severe haemorrhaging and colo-rectal carcinoma are also absolute contra-indications for treatment as are some physical conditions such as severe abdominal or inguinal hernias which cannot be easily reduced. Although it is acceptable to have a colonic after the first trimester, THE HERING CLINIC does not perform treatments during pregnancy.
Leave approximately an hour after having your colonic and then choose soothing foods that are easy on the digestive system. A vegetable juice or soups are good choices and will provide a massive shot of easily assimilated nutrients. Whatever you eat, make sure it is full of goodness. You wouldn’t run your car through the mud once it has been cleaned, would you?
