Bio-Kult Candéa from Protexin® is a probiotic supplement with added garlic and grapefruit seed extract.
Taken daily it can help strengthen the body’s natural defences against Candida overgrowth and may help to prevent it changing from its yeast-like form to the invasive filamentous fungus form.
Bio-Kult Candéa contains:
• Seven strains of probiotic bacteria to reinforce the gut microflora, helping to prevent Candida from finding sites in the gut to grow. They also lower the gut pH so that Candida, which prefers a more alkaline environment, cannot thrive.
• Garlic and grapefruit seed extract – proven natural antifungals. These are also proven to be compatible with the probiotic bacteria in Bio-Kult Candéa.
Why The Hering Clinic Recommends this Product
When using Candea as part of a gut support programme, we have seen favourable results when using this product, especially in regard to candiasis. Candida albicans is the species responsible for the majority of infections, but other species such as Candida glabrata, Candida parapsilosis and Candida tropicalis are also pathogenic ( Pfaller MA, Diekema DJ: 2007).
Probiotics A randomised controlled trial has been undertaken with 80 premature infants, with a view to preventing candida infection. Candidiasis can be a mojor threat to the lives of such infants with their underdeveloped immune systems. The groups of infants receiving Lactobacillus thamnosus for six weeks were significantly less likely to have their intetine colonised by Candida Spp. (23% compared with 49% in the control group) (Martinez R et al:2009).
Garlic The antimicrobial activity has been widely studied and susceptable bacteria include Proteus spp., Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp. (Jezpwa L et al: 1966), Bacillus sp. (Sharma VD et al: 1977), and Staphylococcus aureus (Huddleson IF et al:1944). In addition to this, the antifungal activity of garlic has been studied- with C. albicans being particulary susceptiable ( Adetumbi M et al.: 1986)
The active ingredient within garlic is allicin (Cavallito CJ et al: 1944). One of the mechanisms of action of allicin is the inhibition of growth of C. albicans by stopping lipid production (Adetumbi et al:1986)
Grapefruit seed extract There have been a number of papers demonstrating the antimicrobial properties of grapefruit seed extract (Reagor L et al: 2002). The mechanism of action of grapefruit seed extract is by disrupting the microbial membrane and altering their attachment to the gut wall.
