Green and Juicy but not so Sweet!

Before 11.00 am, most days of the week I have 2 green drinks which I make using my Green Star Juicer.  I use a base of celery and cucumber and then add whatever is available in the garden or my seasonal veg box.  I use ginger and lemon or lime to flavour which are exceptions to my rule of eating seasonal foods from this country.  These are the only fruits I juice because they are cleansing and don’t mess around with my blood sugar.  I do not, under any circumstances, juice fruit but I know there are plenty of people out there who do, Jason Vale and Fred Patenaude, for example.  I strongly disagree with this, as do many others, such as Brian Clement and Robert Young who are both experts in the field of detoxification and run extremely successful retreats.  I think fruit should be eaten seasonally and wherever possible, from this country.  When fruit is eaten, the fibre in the fruit helps to slow down the release of sugar.  When fruit is juiced there is nothing to slow down the release of sugar, resulting in a spike in blood sugar.  There is much controversy surrounding fructose at the moment, and although fruit has its place, the main problem is that it has been over hybridised so as to cater to our ever increasing sweet tastes.  Not only do we eat fruit, but we also consume other sweet things besides, such as chocolate, cakes, biscuits, wine and beer which only further serve to exacerbate our sugar addiction.  I love sugar like everyone else and I use seasonal fruit to appease my sugar cravings, but I never, ever juice it.
