Chestnuts - In tune with the Festive Season!

I am always banging on about eating seasonally.  Eating the same foods all year round is a sure-fire way of becoming intolerant to certain foods.  Tomatoes and strawberries are typical examples.  What will a nutritionist recommend you do if you have a food intolerance?  Give your body a break from the offending food for a few months, which is exactly what happens in nature with the seasonal changes. Do you find fresh tomatoes and strawberries growing naturally in this country in December?  Conversely, chestnuts are a great food to eat at this time of the year.  Chestnuts are extremely nutritious with a high fibre content which helps reduce cholesterol and stabilizes blood-sugar levels. Insoluble fibre creates bulk in the stool and helps it pass through the system quickly which reduces the risk for constipation and intestinal complications like diverticulosis -- a condition where small pockets on the intestinal wall lining become inflamed. Nuts have predominately insoluble fibre. Chestnuts – a favourite food of mine!  If you are feeling constipated and the nuts don't cut it, consider a colonic - great for preparing your body for the onslaught of Christmas!  For a lovely and easy chestnut loaf recipe, check this out!
